The Central Queensland RAC met in Emerald on 13th August 2008. The major topic for discussion was the GRDC funded NVT project. James Clark Chairman of the Northern Panel GRDC along with John Harvey, Executive Manager Varieties GRDC and Alan Bedggood, Manager NVT attended to discuss the RAC concerns.
John Harvey, Executive Manager Varieties GRDC reporting to the CQ RAC on the rapidly changing face of Australian wheat breeding. The CQ RAC is concerned about future wheat breeding for their Central Queensland environment following the recent decision by QDPI&F to cease milling wheat breeding at the Leslie Research Centre Toowoomba.
Dr David Poulsen QDPI&F seen reporting to the CQ RAC on his department’s ongoing role in publishing the Wheat Variety Guide for Queensland. The CQ RAC is very concerned that this annual publication may cease at a time when there is no equivalent replacement for grain growers and agronomists.
Dr Scott Chapman, Plant Industry CSIRO nominee on the CQ RAC reporting to members on the current CSIRO research program relevant to the Central Queensland grain industry. Members are particularly interested in the long coleoptile germplasm identified recently by CSIRO. Growers need longer coleoptile wheat varieties to allow deeper planting for early plant establishment.
